Too hot!
Summertime in Tucson is always hot . . . but not this hot!
Climate Change is making our Beloved Desert City harder to bear in the summer months, and like most issues, some people suffer more than others. A recent study found that people of color are more exposed to heat islands: urban areas surrounded by concrete and asphalt with little to no trees or greenery. These heat islands have also seen the highest temperature increases. People living close by experience hotter days, less cooling at night, and more air pollution, resulting in heat-related deaths and illnesses such as stroke and respiratory difficulty.
You can find maps of urban heat, tree cover, and other layers on this Tucson Tree Equity website. See how your neighborhood ranks!
Part of my platform on the City Council will be to pursue more greenways, parks, and open space in Tucson, especially in those heat islands. We should be looking at alleyways, large parking lots and vacant City land to plant more desert adapted and native trees, shrubs, and groundcover.
Revegetating and protecting native desert landscape protects biodiversity and are powerful carbon sinks in our fight against Climate Change. The City of Tucson needs to lead this charge!
If you want to see more green space and native desert trees and plants, please help my campaign by walking and talking to neighbors before the August 3rd primary. We do this when it is still cool on Saturday mornings and also in the cool of weekday evenings.
Join us this Saturday, June 10, anytime between 8:30 to 9:30 to pick up targeted walk lists and handouts.
