Celebrate Labor Day
Monday is an important holiday, and not just because it means a 3-day weekend or the unofficial end of summer. On Labor Day we honor the American labor movement and the many contributions it has made to our lives.
Strong unions fought to bring us weekends off work, overtime pay, and the end of child labor. Organized labor efforts also achieved:
Higher wages and better benefits, including paid sick leave, maternity leave, affordable health care, predictable work schedules, and job security.
Better and more consistent training of the tradespeople who build and maintain this country’s critical infrastructure.
Safer working conditions that prevent death, illness, and injury.
Union members helped create workplace health and safety standards, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act, increases to minimum wage, workers’ compensation, and lots of the other laws you rely on.
I support organized Labor, and am honored that five Labor groups have endorsed me.
There is important work still to be done, such as making sure all working people earn a living wage. I support the $15 minimum wage initiative for Tucson workers (https://tucsonfightfor15.com/) and encourage you to support this effort with donations and by voting yes on Prop. 206.
Let’s celebrate this holiday by working for a better future.
